Lead-in

This upper-intermediate ESL lesson begins with a lead-in activity where students describe a past concert experience without mentioning the musician’s name. The rest of the class listens and tries to guess the performer. The next section includes questions about what makes a music festival successful and explores the biggest challenges that festivals might face in 2024.

Vocabulary

In the vocabulary preview section, students will identify the words they know and briefly explain them. Next, they’ll discuss the unfamiliar words on the following page, where they can read definitions, and the teacher will offer examples if necessary.

Article, Summary, Discussion

This lesson is based on an article containing 433 words, with an estimated reading time of three minutes. Students will read the article in pairs or small groups, discussing key points as they go. Vocabulary is highlighted within the article for easier recognition during reading. Afterward, students will see a summary of the article’s key points, and their task is to expand on the highlighted words by adding more details. A discussion page follows, allowing for a deeper exploration of challenges faced by music festivals, the impact of social media, the ethics of reselling festival tickets at higher prices, and other related topics.

Debate, Pair work

In the debate section, students are divided into two groups. One group will argue in favor of the given statement, while the other will argue against it. After the debate, students will summarize the key points from both sides. Debate topics include the future of music festivals, diversity in festival lineups, and festival accessibility. This section is designed to encourage students to express their viewpoints and engage in meaningful discussion. The final page, titled “Pair work,” serves as an excellent extension to your ESL lesson on festivals and music. Here, students will plan a festival project, considering factors such as location, target audience, lineup, marketing strategy, and more. This task helps students apply what they’ve learned in a practical and creative way.

This B2 ESL lesson plan on music festivals is available in Light, Dark, and A4 printable formats, making it adaptable for any classroom setting. Focused on the challenges and future of music festivals, this engaging lesson includes activities that prompt students to share their concert experiences, expand their festival-related vocabulary, and participate in debates on topics like the future of festivals, diversity in lineups, and accessibility. It’s perfect for English learners looking to improve their language skills while exploring current issues in the music festival scene.
