In this intermediate ESL lesson, students explore the challenges of dealing with difficult neighbors while practicing new vocabulary. They’ll learn 14 words like banging noise, heated argument, hoarder, etc., and use these to talk about their own neighbor experiences. Through engaging readings and activities, students will discuss issues, complete comprehension tasks, and fill in the missing vowels to complete the words in the sentences. Finally, they’ll create and describe AI-generated images of “bad neighbors” and see how their classmates interpret them.

Lead-In
This intermediate lesson on neighbors kicks off with five engaging discussion questions to get students actively involved in the topic. They’ll then choose one noun, one adjective, and one verb to describe the worst neighbor imaginable, explaining their choices from a set of 18 words. This activity sparks creativity while building useful vocabulary around real-life scenarios.
Vocabulary
The vocabulary section is split into two parts: first, students answer questions to define key words, then they match these words with pictures on the next page.
Reading, Comprehension
The reading section includes three short stories about unusual neighbors. Before reading, students look at the titles and discuss what they think each story might be about. They briefly share guesses, then read each short paragraph. After reading, students complete a table with information from the stories, answering five comprehension questions in total.
Agree or disagree, Practice
This discussion page features six agree-or-disagree statements using vocabulary from the lesson. Feel free to go through as many as you need. After the discussion, there’s a practice page where students fill in the missing vowels to complete words. There are 12 sentences in total, each using vocabulary from today’s lesson.
AI neighbor
The final page is an engaging task where students create a funny AI-generated picture of a “bad neighbor” using vocabulary from this lesson. First, ensure that each student has an account on the platform. They’ll enter their prompt, select an image, and then classmates will describe what they see in the picture. The student who created it can then say if it matches what they intended to show. This activity can also be assigned as homework.
