Odd one out

This lesson on tricky plurals begins with five groups of words where students must identify the noun that changes differently in its plural form. Since this can be challenging, be ready to offer guidance if students need help.

Regular plurals, Irregular plurals 1/2

The next section explains how regular plural nouns work in English, with three key rules and multiple examples to boost your students’ confidence. The following page covers irregular plurals, including descriptions, rules, and sentence examples. Be prepared to provide extra explanations if needed.

Practice 1, Practice 2

After reviewing the description and rule pages, students will practice replacing emojis in sentences with the correct irregular nouns in Practice 1. In Practice 2, they’ll write the correct form of irregular nouns in sentences. Each activity includes 12 sentences for hands-on learning.

Irregular plurals 2/2, Practice 3

The next section on irregular plurals explains plural nouns that take a plural verb and those that require a singular verb, with clear sentence examples. Following this, Practice 3 challenges students with 12 sentences where they must select the correct verb for each plural noun.

Questions, Video

The discussion activity includes seven questions on everyday topics, with plural nouns highlighted for focus. Afterward, students will watch a short video by an Instagram blogger who discusses the oddities of plural pronunciations in English. They should watch it twice and explain the difference between “fish” and “fishes.” Lastly, students will practice by writing the plurals for seven given words.

Quiz

The final page features 10 multiple-choice questions where students must select the correct answer for each one. This can be assigned as homework or used as a group or individual activity in class.
