Lead-in, Vocabulary

This ESL lesson focuses on friendships, relationships, and ghosting. It kicks off with seven thought-provoking “Would You Rather” questions that invite students to explore their choices in various scenarios, giving them a chance to practice simple grammar while sharing their opinions. After this interactive discussion, students move to the next page, where they will encounter 12 casual phrases commonly used for texting in the video. Their task is to transform these informal expressions into complete sentences, allowing them to enhance their writing skills in a fun and relatable way.

Definitions, Video Preview

The vocabulary definition page offers concise explanations and examples for each phrase. You can take extra time here to provide additional examples and clarify any uncertainties your students might have. Next, there’s a quick video preview page featuring three screenshots from the video. Students will be tasked with predicting what they believe will happen in the video and discussing the relationships between the characters.

Video, Questions

The video tells the story of a guy who ghosts a girl who really misses him. Despite her efforts, they struggle to connect. Watch the video with your students, pausing as needed to read the messages exchanged between the characters. Afterward, they should answer the five questions on the next page to ensure they grasp the main concepts. Encourage them to ask their own questions as well.

Discussion, Comments

The discussion page includes a brief paragraph explaining what ghosting is, along with three follow-up questions designed to spark conversation about their thoughts and experiences with ghosting. The comments page includes four adapted comments suitable for this level. As always, students will read the comments and share their thoughts on them. Be prepared to explain any difficult concepts they encounter and encourage them to provide real-life examples to illustrate their understanding.

Matching, Speaking

The matching activity includes all the phrases from the video. Students will read each phrase and find the appropriate response that corresponds to it. The final page presents 10 topics for students to choose from, allowing them to speak for three minutes on a selected subject. Topics include a friend who never replies, a friend who sends too many texts, a friend who often gets drunk, or a friend with whom they’ve lost touch, among others.
