Staying Fit
This A2 lesson covers staying fit and gym vocabulary for lower-level learners. Students listen to three short stories, match fitness words to definitions, and plan their own workout week. The activities are practical and personal, so students at this level can participate confidently even with limited English.

Start the lesson with the lead-in questions. These are personal and easy to answer, which works well for A2 students. Ask the class the first two or three questions together, then put students in pairs for the rest. The “Think for 30 seconds” prompt that follows gives quieter students a chance to gather their thoughts before they speak. Give them the full 30 seconds before opening it up to the class.
The vocabulary section has two parts. Students first match ten gym and fitness words to their definitions, then complete sentences using the same words. Don’t rush this stage. A2 learners need repetition to feel confident with new vocabulary. Let students check answers in pairs before you go through it together. These words come up again in the audio transcripts, so the more familiar students are with them here, the easier the listening activities will be.
There are three short audio clips, each about a different approach to staying fit. Camila goes to the gym before work, John cycles every day, and Priya does yoga for her back. After each clip, there’s a short discussion question for the class. Keep the answers brief at A2 level. One or two sentences is enough. The comprehension quiz after all three clips tests specific details, so remind students before they listen that they don’t need to catch every word.
The Odd One Out activity works well as a quick whole-class game. Students tend to enjoy it. The quote discussion only needs two minutes. For the final writing task, let students fill in their fitness week plan alone first, then share and compare with a partner. This gives everyone a chance to contribute, even the quieter ones.
